Experimental Design
Whatever your level of research experience our Experimental Design training will teach you everything you need to know to enhance the rigor and reproducibility of the data you are generating.
Join us to:
-
Learn how to design experiments that allow you to identify effects of interest and/or show evidence of causality.
-
Discover how to take manage sources of variation and potential confounders within your experimental design.
-
Practice identifying the experimental unit and the most appropriate experimental design for different study purposes and hypotheses.
-
Understand statistical power, how to calculate it and how to use power analysis tools.
Theory elements include:
Session 1
Understanding how poor experimental design is contributing to the reproducibility crisis and why improving the 3Vs of construct, external and internal validity will help.
Session 2
Common experimental design flaws, identifying the experimental unit, how to handle sources of variation within an experiment such as sex, plus good research reporting practices.
Session 3
Understanding statistical power as a measure of sensitivity, the factors that influence it and how to calculate it, plus common experimental design formats and when to use them.
Practical elements include:
Session 1
Causes of the reproducibility crisis; when is masking is most critical; plus an activity to practice identifying variables and how to handle them.
Session 2
Type I and Type II errors; an activity to practice correctly identifying the experimental unit; plus how to design studies to include both sexes.
Session 3
Activity to consolidate understanding of power and sample size; plus practice identifying the best experimental design for different scenarios.
Feedback from previous participants:
“I have gotten to grips with how to plan out experiments and what sort of factors I should consider when designing experiments, what sort of study design to pick and mainly how to calculate statistical power which is key for my upcoming experiments”
“The course was addressing relevant topics that are often left behind when training a new scientist, so extremely useful to get a better idea of concepts and terms that are often used by experienced scientists but that novel scientists don't have a great idea of. The course was well timed and not rushed through. There has been space for questions and the activity greatly helped to the comprehension and internalisation of concepts..”
“Congratulations for the course. It's very well structured and dynamic, the levels of opportunities to interact and participate are high.”
“Intensive, in depth introduction to research methods for in vivo research scientists.”
“I found the course very complete and functional with a lot of practical examples”
“It introduced many new concepts related to designing in vivo experiments and I feel I have refined tools now to plan out my next experiments.”
“The course has given me an understanding of the mechanisms behind experimental design. I have gained awareness towards the different strategies to plan an experiment and how to gather the data to correctly address the experimental question. I also learnt how to correctly evaluate the statistical significance of an experimental design.”
Recommended for:
“Other research scientists who need more development on their experimental design and power analysis skills”
“Anyone who is starting a project on experimental science or is involved in experimental design.”
“Definitely wish I had attended this course earlier in my career (I'm a postdoc), so I would recommend to PhD students”
“New PhD students as well as those approaching their final year as they will be actively planning experiments.”
“People who have no prior experience to doing in vivo work or for people who would like to improve their in vivo and in vitro experimental designs”
